From Nicaragua to the World Stage
Sheynnis Palacios, born in Nicaragua, grew up in a family environment where love, education, and respect for diversity were deeply encouraged. From an early age, she demonstrated an insatiable curiosity about the world around her, nurturing a passion for exploring new ideas and cultures. Her childhood was marked by significant experiences that shaped her character and instilled in her core values of perseverance and empathy.
Sheynnis graduated with honors with a degree in Social Communication from the Universidad Centroamericana, obtaining her bachelor’s degree just months before the institution faced significant political challenges. Despite the surrounding uncertainty and social tensions, her determination and commitment to academic excellence led her to overcome these obstacles and stand out as an exemplary student.
An Advocate for Mental Health and Women’s Empowerment
Inspired by a personal experience with anxiety, Sheynnis dedicated herself to actively promoting mental health through her “Understand Your Mind” initiative. Convinced of the importance of raising awareness and offering real support to those facing emotional challenges, she created a dedicated platform to provide resources and guidance. Her leadership in this field quickly made her a role model for those seeking to make a positive difference in their local communities.
By expressing her deep admiration for Mary Wollstonecraft, Sheynnis demonstrated her commitment to equal opportunities, defying expectations and blazing a trail for future generations.
Miss Universe 2023 was the 72nd Miss Universe pageant, held in San Salvador, El Salvador, on November 18, 2023. At the end of the historic event, Sheynnis Palacios was crowned as Miss Universe 2023 by R’Bonney Gabriel of the United States, standing out among contestants from 84 participating countries.

We had the unique opportunity to engage in a brief yet highly insightful one-on-one conversation with Sheynnis before her arrival in Houston, exploring her journey through three significant questions.
Martin: Thank you, Sheynnis, for taking the time to visit with us. As you may know, Houston is the fourth-largest city in the nation, and the most diverse. As Miss Universe, you have the privilege of traveling to numerous countries and experiencing their diverse cultures—including recently being a guest of honor at the Cannes Film Festival. How do you incorporate and share elements of Nicaraguan culture during your international travels?
Sheynnis: Traveling as Miss Universe has given me the opportunity to be a proud ambassador of my Nicaraguan culture. In each country I visit, I take with me the richness of our traditions, music, and gastronomy. I love sharing the history and spirit of our people, whether offering typical dishes like nacatamal, or simply talking about the warmth and hospitality of the Nicaraguan people. These elements allow me to connect with people from different cultures while highlighting the beauty of my native country.
Martin: Reflecting on your journey and the lessons you’ve learned, what advice would you offer to women striving to achieve their goals?
Sheynnis: My advice to women pursuing their dreams is to never underestimate the power of determination and perseverance. Every challenge and obstacle you encounter along the way is an opportunity to learn and grow. Always keep your vision clear and your goals in mind, and don’t be afraid to ask for help and support when you need it. Surrounding yourself with positive and motivating people is crucial. And, above all, trust in yourself and your ability to achieve everything you set your mind to.
Martin: Sheynnis, at such a young age you have already learned, experienced, and achieved so much, including holding one of the most prestigious titles in the world. After crowning your successor, what are your plans for the future? How has this experience influenced your aspirations?
Sheynnis: Winning the Miss Universe title has been a transformative and enriching experience. After crowning my successor, I plan to continue working on projects that promote the education and empowerment of women and girls around the world. Additionally, I want to focus on my communications career, taking advantage of the opportunities this degree has given me to continue growing in these industries. My experience has taught me the importance of using my influence to make a lasting, positive impact.
About the BEC Wellness Foundation
Sheynnis Palacios was invited to Houston by the BEC Wellness Foundation, led by Saidy Maury. This is a recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to empowering local communities through fundraising, grant writing, and essential social services.
For over seven years, they have been highly active in the Houston area, providing academic scholarships to outstanding women dedicated to community service. The foundation also supports the Houston Food Bank, various Women’s Foundations, and other essential non-profits. Through iconic local events such as “Miss Belleza México USA” and “Miss Belleza Internacional Universo”, they celebrate beauty, talent, and social responsibility, establishing a beloved modern tradition in Houston.
