For centuries, aristocratic dandies, monarchs emblematic of a nation’s spirit and charismatic politicians helmed changes in fashion. Presently, influential institutions dictate what is fashionable, not powerful social elites. Where millions once looked towards figures like the Duke of Windsor, fashion magazines now capture that attention, chief amongst them being Vogue.

Editorials are central to the heart of a magazine. They shape an organization’s identity, offering a window to their convictions, their beliefs and in the case of fashion magazines, what is fashionable. Anna Wintour, the former editor-in-chief of Vogue, was arguably the most influential figure in fashion. However, now Chloé Françoise Malle, the former editor of Vogue.com, will now serve as the head of editorial content for Vogue U.S.

Her Vision for Vogue

As the voice at the heart of Vogue, it is her duty to shape the future of America’s most influential fashion magazine, redefining its position in the industry. In an interview with The New Yorker, Ms. Wintour was confident Malle would offer new insight and direction for the company, stating, “[Malle] wants to be her own person…She just wants to be herself and show herself and prove herself and make news, as I’m sure she will.”

For Malle’s own ambitions, she plans for Vogue to be distinguished by the intention in each magazine and offer readers unique insight they won’t find elsewhere. Ms. Malle announced her plan to appeal to “a more direct, smaller, healthier audience”, offering readers “original, witty, irreverent, joyful points of view on things.”

Though a notable shift for the company, Ms. Malle offers the company an interesting, sincere and charismatic approach that will serve as a muse for designers and readers alike. Her more youthful and vibrant attitude resonates with a younger, more impressionable audience that values personal expression and intrigue over an authoritative voice on fashion. Ms. Wintour’s efforts were instrumental in giving Vogue its reputation and authority, shaping it into a monolithic empire. Ms. Malle’s direction offers the brand an opportunity to excel beyond standard fashion magazines.
