Sheynnis Palacios, born in Nicaragua, grew up in a family environment where love, education and respect for diversity were encouraged. From an early age, she demonstrated an insatiable curiosity about the world around her, nurturing a passion for exploring new ideas and cultures. Her childhood was marked by significant experiences that shaped her character and instilled in her values of perseverance and empathy.

Sheynnis graduated with honors with a degree in Social Communication from the Universidad Centroamericana, obtaining her bachelor’s degree just months before the institution faced significant political challenges. Despite her uncertainty and social tensions, her determination and commitment to academic excellence led her to overcome obstacles and stand out as an exemplary student.

Inspired by a personal experience with anxiety, Sheynnis dedicated herself to promoting mental health through the “Understand Your Mind” initiative. Convinced of the importance of raising awareness and offering support to those facing emotional challenges, she created a platform dedicated to providing resources and guidance. Her leadership and dedication in this field made her a role model for those seeking to make a positive difference in her communities.

By expressing her admiration for Mary Wollstone- craft, Sheynnis demonstrated her deep commitment to equal opportunities for women and her determination to follow in the footsteps of those pioneers who fought for justice and freedom. Her choice reflects her own belief in defying expectations and blazing a trail for future genera- tions, inspiring others to boldly pursue their dreams.

Miss Universe 2023 was the 72nd Miss Universe pageant, held in the capital city of El Salvador, San Salvador, on 18 November 2023. At the end of the event, Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua was crowned as Miss Universe 2023 by R’Bonney Gabriel of the United States. 84 countries participated, including the United States.

As Miss Universe 2023, Sheynnis Palacios leaves a lasting legacy of hope. OUR PUBLISHER’S CONVERSATION WITH MISS UNIVERSE

We had the opportunity to engage in a brief yet insightful one-on-one conversation with Sheynnis before her arrival in Houston, during which we posed three simple but significant questions. Here’s how it unfolded:

Martin – Thank you Sheynnis for taking the time to visit with us. As you may know, Houston is the fourth-largest city in the nation, and the most diverse. As Miss Universe, you have the privilege of traveling to numerous countries and experiencing their diverse cultures. In fact you just were a guest of honor at the Cannes Film Festival 2024. How do you incorporate and share elements of Nicaraguan culture during your international travels?

Sheynnis – Traveling as Miss Universe has given me the opportunity to be an ambassador of my Nicaraguan culture. In each country I visit, I take with me the richness of our traditions, music and gastronomy. I love sharing the history and spirit of our people, whether offering typical dishes like nacatamal, or simply talking about the warmth and hospitality of the Nicaraguan people. These elements not only allow me to connect with people from different cultures, but also highlight the beauty and diversity of my native country.

Martin – Reflecting on your journey and the lessons you’ve learned, what advice would you offer to women striving to achieve their goals?

Sheynnis – My advice to women pursuing their dreams is to never under- estimate the power of determination and perseverance. Every challenge and obstacle you encounter along the way is an opportunity to learn and grow. Always keep your vision clear and your goals in mind, and don’t be afraid to ask for help and support when you need it. Surrounding yourself with positive and motivating people is crucial. And, above all, trust in yourself and your ability to achieve everything you set your mind to.

Martin – Sheynnis, at such a young age you have already learned, experienced and achieved a lot, including holding one of the most prestigious titles in the world. After crowning your successor at the Miss Universe 2024 pageant in Mexico, what are your goals and plans for the future? How has your experience as Miss Universe influenced or changed your future aspirations?

Sheynnis – Winning the Miss Universe title has been a transformative and enriching experience. After crowning my successor, I plan to continue working on projects that promote the education and empowerment of women and girls around the world. Additionally, I want to focus on my communications career, taking advantage of the opportunities that this degree has given me to continue growing and learning in these industries. My experience as Miss Universe has taught me the importance of using my influence to make a positive and lasting impact, and that is something I will take with me to all my future aspirations.

ABOUT BEC WELLNESS FOUNDATION

Sheynnis Palacios was invited to Houston by the BEC Wellness Foundation, led by Saidy Maury. This is a 501(c)(3) non- profit organization dedicated to empowering communities through fundraising, grant writing, and social services. Their mission focuses on promoting beauty, education, and social responsibility. For over seven years, they have been active in the Houston area, providing scholarships to outstanding women dedicated to community service.

BEC Wellness Foundation supports the Houston Food Bank, Women’s Foundations, and other organizations by collecting toys and assisting at events, bringing joy and resources to various non-profits, including churches. Through the iconic Houston events “Miss Belleza México USA” and “Miss Belleza Internacional Universo”, they celebrate beauty, talent, and social responsibility, establishing a beloved tradition in Houston.
